Does Medicare pay for hospice?
Yes — hospice is one of the things Medicare genuinely covers. The Medicare hospice benefit pays for the hospice team, medications related to the terminal illness, equipment, and supplies, usually at no cost to the family. (This is the opposite of assisted living room and board, which Medicare never covers — the two get confused constantly.)
Can Mom be on hospice while living in an assisted living home?
Yes, and it happens every day. The hospice team comes to her — nurse visits, aide support, medications, equipment — while the home keeps providing her room, meals, and daily care. Many Tucson homes coordinate beautifully with hospice agencies; some homes are better at it than others, and we know which.
What's the difference between a hospice service agency and inpatient hospice?
A service agency brings hospice care to wherever the person lives — their house or an assisted living home. Inpatient hospice is a place: a licensed unit for short stays when symptoms need round-the-clock management.
